August contained a number of developments in music streaming; some about costs, some about the content. TIDAL and Apple Music both nudged their prices up, AI-generated music is getting labels, and prediction markets are muscling in on the charts. On the brighter side: Winamp is teaming up with Deezer, some new discovery tools launched, a shiny-new-thing from Sonos and… MusicBrainz has a new leader!
Streaming prices march onward
It’s been a while since streaming prices moved much, but August saw two increases land within days of each other. Neither is exactly budget-busting, but each one chips away at the idea that renting is always the cheap option.

TIDAL’s bump is a modest dollar, but Apple Music’s is a little more consequential (for family plans), and the company is citing rising licensing costs for the move. For library owners, it’s the same story as ever: at some point, buying beats renting (plus there are other benefits).

AI labels and chart games
Two “back-office” stories this month about how streaming works. First, the music industry is gearing up to label AI-generated music on streaming platforms. It raises an interesting question for the rest of us: should self-owned libraries start populating “AI-generated” tags too?

Old favourites, new tricks
August had a distinctly retro flavour, from a nostalgic music player getting a streaming partnership to simulating cassettes in digital audio streams.
First up, a name from the past: Winamp is partnering with Deezer to bring streaming alongside your local library. The 90s called… it brought a subscription!
